Wellness Program
The Wellness Treatment Center utilizes a unique Wellness
Program based on findings from the extensively
researched book, The Depression Cure: The 6-Step
Approach to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Stephen Ilardi.
While healthy lifestyle choices are effective for anyone
wanting to feel better, they are especially helpful for
those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other
mental health issues. When these six lifestyle choices
are used together consistently and specifically, the
results are quite remarkable.
1. Nutrition
You are what you eat, and the average
American diet today is lacking in nutrition, especially
in omega-3 fatty acids. To accomplish the necessary
nutritional requirements for overall well-being and the
anti-oxidant effects, we provide supplements as a part
of the Wellness Program.
2. Exercise
Besides being good for you physically,
exercise also produces the release of serotonin and
dopamine in the brain, which are the “feel good”
chemicals. To keep these chemicals abundant, a
structured exercise plan is part of the Wellness
Program.
We also have personal trainers, exercise
specialists, and yoga instructors who offer classes
onsite.
3. Anti-Rumination
You can often be your own worst enemy
when it comes to fixating or replaying negative thoughts
over and over in your mind, also known as rumination.
Learning how to identify and stop the pattern of
negative thinking is very powerful. Through group work
and behavioral techniques, we help you become aware of
when you start to brood over negative thoughts and
identify potentially high-risk situations and people. We
also give you practical tools and alternate activities
to replace the rumination.
4. Light
Bright light is critical to hormone
balance, energy levels, sleep regulation, and overall
well-being. The program dictates light therapy with
natural sunlight or light box therapy. We can supply the
light box therapy for clients to take home and try
before they make the investment.
5. Social Interaction
You can often feel very isolated when
you are depressed or anxious. Social connection and
meaningful activity are a very important component of
the Wellness Program. You’ll learn how to improve social
interaction and relationships, and schedule specific
action steps to engage in meaningful activity with your
family, friends, and community.
6. Sleep
Most Americans do not get enough sleep,
and depression and anxiety often trigger sleep
disturbances. The Wellness Program promotes sleep
hygiene with techniques to ensure the recommended 7-9
hours of sleep every night.
While these six components have been researched
extensively, we closely monitor you and your results,
and fine-tune the program to best meet your individual
needs.
